Abstract
The Serra Project is a new Medhelan Duo recording project dedicated to Luciano Maria Serra’s chamber music. The album, to be released by Da Vinci Classics, brings together works spanning more than two decades, from the virtuosic Capriccio to the evocative Andante Oscuro and Ciaramiri, alongside the two main pieces of the project: the 2 contrasting Violin and Piano sonatas. Release scheduled for Spring 2027.
Luciano Maria Serra is a Sicilian composer, conductor and pianist whose music reflects the landscapes, traditions and spirit of his homeland through lyrical expression, refined harmonies and rhythmic vitality.

A new recording project by the Medhelan Duo dedicated to the music of Sicilian composer Luciano Maria Serra, featuring his two violin sonatas alongside works for solo violin and solo viola.
Rooted in the colors, landscapes, traditions, and spirit of Sicily, Serra’s music brings together lyrical expression, refined harmonic language and rhythmic energy.
The recording sessions have been completed, and we look forward to sharing this musical journey.

The composer
Luciano Maria Serra is an Italian composer, conductor and pianist. Born in Sicily, in 1975, he writes music for the stage, opera, orchestral and chamber works, and music for screen and multimedia.
In 2015 he was the assistant of Gustavo Dudamel (Mozart's Nozze di Figaro, Berlin Staatsoper) and in 2017 of Domingo Hindoyan (Rossini's Semiramide, Opera National de Lorraine).
His music was performed by Edicson Ruiz, Veronika Eberle, Guido Rimonda, Nicola Malagugini, Bruno Boano, Andrea Lucchesini, Quartetto di Cremona, in the musical seasons of the Teatro Massimo (Catania), Virée Classique Festival (Montreal), Viotti Festival (Vercelli), Teatro Valli (Reggio Emilia), Mãrvao International Music Festival, Associazione Musicale "Eliodoro Sollima" (Palermo), Associazione Siciliana Amici della Musica (Palermo), Associazione Musicale Etnea (Catania), Teatro Machiavelli (Catania), Orestiadi (Gibellina) and published by "Da Vinci" (Osaka) and "Kelidon" (Palermo).
His film scores was performed in international sphere (Festival Internazionale del Cinema d'Animazione of Athens, Ars Electronica Festival of Vienna, Arcipelago Film Festival of Rome, Costaiblea Film Festival of Ragusa)
As conductor, he has a wide repertoire of opera and symphonic music. He conducted also the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana of Palermo in a concert dedicated to the music of Mozart and Haydn. As pianist he played at Philarmonie of Berlin and in many others concert halls. Luciano Maria Serra was graduated in composition, conduction and piano at the Conservatorio di Musica of Palermo. The two Violin Sonatas
The two Violin Sonatas
Violin Sonata No. 1 (2023) opens with a slow introduction, establishing an atmosphere of anticipation before moving into an Allegro deciso in sonata form. The exposition is written out in full and repeated twice, emphasizing the architectural clarity and momentum of the movement.
The second movement follows an ABA design, with an Andante–Allegretto–Andante structure that creates a contrasting, more intimate character.
The final movement, marked Presto, brings renewed energy and momentum. In a striking gesture, the opening slow introduction from the first movement unexpectedly returns before the music closes with a powerful transition back into the Presto, creating a dramatic and effective conclusion to the sonata.
Violin Sonata No. 2 (2025) begins with an Allegro moderato in sonata form. As in the First Sonata, the exposition is fully written out and repeated twice.
The development section gives particular attention to the second theme, exploring and transforming its musical material. In the recapitulation, the second theme returns in a significantly more condensed form, ultimately taking on the function of a coda and bringing the movement toward its conclusion.
The second movement, marked Andante siciliano, introduces an especially evocative Mediterranean character, while the final Vivace brings the sonata to a lively and energetic close.

This composition grew out of a desire to explore the violin’s soloistic technique and bring it into the realm of my own musical language. It is the first work I have dedicated to the instrument: a work of artistic development, yet one that is fully realized in its final form.
Andante Oscuro
Andante Oscuro
This piece was commissioned from me by Guido Rimonda for inclusion in his concert programmes devoted to his own “Black Violin,” a highly unusual Stradivarius with a macabre history behind it. An atmosphere of darkness and mystery pervades the entire composition, while, from a technical standpoint, the violin is pushed beyond the limits of its conventional capabilities, particularly in its polyphonic writing. Highly unorthodox fingering techniques lend an almost supernatural quality to the unfolding of the individual voices.

Ciaramiri
I ciaramìri—roof tiles, in Sicilian—protect us from the elements and soak up the sun. These pages undulate like the curved profile of the roof tiles of my homeland. The viola, capriciously, moves through a dance rippled by the shifting colours of this celestial body, the true despot—alongside Etna—of a Trinacria as beautiful as it is cruel.
