Martucci Project

Abstract

The Martucci Project is an initiative to rediscover and promote the music of Giuseppe Martucci, a major Italian composer whose historical significance has been largely forgotten.
Matteo Generani, co-founder of the Medhelan Project, is one of the major scholars and performers of Martucci's music. He released a Naxos CD featuring seventeen piano works, including twelve world-premiere recordings. The Medhelan Project will produce other discographic projects with the master's chamber music.
Who is Martucci? From Naples to Bologna and back, Martucci championed instrumental music, bridging Italian lyricism with the symphonic and chamber traditions of Europe.

Historical amnesia

On February 21, 1911, Gustav Mahler stood before the musicians of the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall to conduct what would tragically become his final concert. Despite the advice of his physician, Joseph Fraenkel, Mahler did not cancel the performance. The program was strikingly Italian in character and included Giuseppe Martucci’s Second Piano Concerto, Op. 66, with Ernesto Consolo as soloist.

The presence of Martucci’s music in Mahler’s final program is more than an intriguing historical coincidence. It offers a glimpse into the international reputation that Martucci had achieved during his lifetime.

Today, however, his name remains far less familiar than those of many of his contemporaries.

This discrepancy between historical importance and modern recognition is one of the reasons we have undertaken this project, and is clearly remarked by this quote by Cesare Pollini:

“He has spent his life for the good of our musical culture with a saintly selflessness, with a strength of intellect and character that place him among the most illustrious men who have honored our homeland. He, the greatest national musician after Giuseppe Verdi. That perhaps the love that He bestowed in serving our Art had curtailed his days?”

— Cesare Pollini to Marchioness Paola Pes di Villamarina, Padova, June 21, 1909

NAXOS CD

This first Naxos recording was concieved to starting to overcome this paradox.

The CD, by Matteo Genreani, is dedicated to Martucci’s piano music and presents seventeen works, including twelve world-premiere recordings. The repertoire spans more than three decades of his creative life, from early character pieces and pedagogical works to the refined music of his maturity.

These works offer only one part of this extraordinary legacy, but they reveal a composer of elegance, intelligence, warmth, and individuality.

Who is Giuseppe Martucci

Giuseppe Martucci (1856–1909) was a composer, pianist, conductor and teacher who devoted much of his life to the renewal of instrumental music in Italy. At a time when Italian musical culture was dominated overwhelmingly by opera, Martucci pursued another path: symphonies, concertos, chamber music and an extraordinarily rich body of piano works.

His influence extended beyond his own compositions. As a teacher and musical director, he contributed to the formation of a generation that included Ottorino Respighi and Guido Alberto Fano, while as a conductor he helped introduce Italian audiences to works by Wagner, Brahms and other composers who were still relatively unfamiliar in Italy.

His career unfolded principally in three places: Capua and Naples, Bologna, and finally Naples again.

The trajectory is revealing. The young pianist emerged from the Neapolitan tradition; the mature musician became one of the central figures in Bologna’s musical life; and, in his final years, he returned to Naples to lead its conservatory and promote a new musical culture in his native city.

Yet Martucci’s importance is not only institutional.

His piano music reveals a fascinating meeting of apparently distant worlds: the Italian keyboard tradition of the eighteenth century, Classical forms, Romantic lyricism, brilliant nineteenth-century piano writing, and, increasingly, the refined harmonic language of the fin de siècle.

This selection brings together three different moments of Martucci’s piano writing. From the youthful character of the Sonata facile, Op. 41 to the greater maturity of Op. 55, these works reveal the evolution of his pianistic language—always elegant, lyrical, and deeply rooted in the Italian tradition.

1874, Napoli. The Sonata, Op. 22 belongs to the world of Martucci’s chamber music and reflects his growing engagement with the European tradition. It is an important example of the composer moving beyond the piano and toward a broader instrumental language.

Capua and Naples

Martucci was born in Capua in 1856 and moved to Naples as a child. He studied at the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella, where he came into contact with some of the leading musicians of the Neapolitan tradition, including Beniamino Cesi and Paolo Serrao.

Naples gave him the foundations of his musical language: a strong sense of melody, the tradition of the Italian keyboard school, and an early fascination with the music of the past.

At the same time, he developed extraordinary abilities as a pianist and began composing while still very young.

His early piano works reveal a composer searching for his own voice—one rooted in Italian musical culture but already open to the wider European world.

1877, Napoli. The Piano Quintet, Op. 45 was one of Martucci’s first major successes. The work won the competition of the Società del Quartetto di Milano and was later performed in Milan with Martucci himself at the piano and the celebrated violinist August Wilhelmj.

The Quintet reveals the strong influence of Schumann and Brahms, particularly in its thematic connections, complex structure, and expressive Romantic atmosphere. At the same time, Martucci’s long-breathed melodies and vocal lyricism give the music a distinctly Italian character.

Across its four movements, the work moves between intimate poetry, dramatic intensity, playful brilliance, and radiant energy. It is an extraordinary achievement for such a young composer and an important example of Martucci’s ambition to establish Italian chamber music within the wider European tradition.

1880, Napoli. Originally for cello and piano, Op. 52 has been reimagined here for viola and piano. The darker, warmer sound of the viola offers a new perspective on this remarkable late work.

1880, Napoli. In the Tarantella, Martucci turns rhythm and movement into a brilliant piano miniature. My recording explores its energy while preserving the elegance and clarity of his Italian pianistic style.

1882, Napoli. The Piano Trio No. 1, Op. 59 is one of Martucci’s finest early chamber works. Its music combines the influence of Brahms with the long, expressive melodies and vocal lyricism of the Italian tradition.

Across its four movements, moments of energetic rhythmic movement alternate with intimate and deeply poetic passages. The piano and strings are constantly engaged in a rich dialogue, creating a work that is both structurally ambitious and emotionally immediate.

The Trio was awarded the first prize of the Società del Quartetto di Milano, confirming Martucci’s growing reputation as one of the leading Italian composers of instrumental music.

Bologna

In 1886 Martucci became director of the Liceo Musicale in Bologna, a position he held for sixteen years. Bologna became the center of his artistic and cultural activity.

Here he worked tirelessly to strengthen the presence of symphonic and chamber music in Italy. He conducted major works by Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann and Wagner, and in 1888 conducted the Italian premiere of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde.

Martucci did not simply imitate German music. His ambition was to create a dialogue between European instrumental traditions and the Italian musical identity he had inherited from Naples.

Bologna therefore marked the transformation of Martucci from a gifted pianist and composer into a major cultural figure.

1886, Bologna. The Capriccio, Op. 57 No. 1 belongs to Martucci’s mature period, where virtuosity becomes increasingly refined and expressive. My recording seeks to bring out both its brilliance and its lyrical character.

1889, Bologna. Originally conceived for solo piano, Romanza facile reveals Martucci’s natural gift for melody and intimacy. In this new version for violin and piano, the singing quality of the original is brought into a new chamber dimension.

1891, Bologna. The Notturno in G-flat major, Op. 70 No. 1 is one of Martucci’s most intimate and poetic piano works. Its gentle lyricism, delicate harmonies, and nocturnal atmosphere reveal the composer’s deeply expressive side. Martucci later orchestrated the piece in 1901, transforming its subtle piano textures into a broader orchestral sound while preserving its characteristic melancholy and warmth.

The Return

In 1902 Martucci returned to Naples as director of the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella. It was the final and most mature period of his life.

He continued to promote orchestral and chamber music and devoted himself to teaching, conducting, and composition. His musical language became increasingly refined, with richer harmonies and a more subtle sense of color.

The late works, including the Notturni, reveal a composer who was fully aware of the European developments of his time while remaining deeply connected to the Italian tradition.

Martucci died in Naples on June 1, 1909, at only fifty-three years of age.

An Italian Treasure

Martucci occupies a unique place in Italian music. He belongs to the world of Naples, but also to the European musical culture of Bologna; he loved Italian melody, yet understood the power of symphonic form and the historical dimension of music.

His career was not long, but his artistic vision was remarkably broad.

Martucci is not simply a forgotten figure of Italian musical history.

He is an Italian treasure waiting to be heard again.

Below is a lecture by Matteo Generani, a leading expert on Giuseppe Martucci, whose doctoral research at the University of Missouri–Kansas City focused on the composer and his music.
